The RAP-road project

Youth Incentives (YI) educates young people the RAP-rule conform the Dutch Approach. RAP stands for Rights-based approach, Acceptance of young people's sexuality and Participation of young people. YI uses the RAP-tool for this. In short, this inventarisation assures that the prerequisites for the good quality of sexuality education are met.

To attract more attention to the RAP-rule and to promote the RAP message YI allows young people to create their own RAP-song. In a professional studio they write, play and produce a song with a video clip with the RAP ideas embedded into their own culture. A pilot project was done at the Philipines and was a great succes. Please download the first RAP-song and the lyrics now! More countries will follow. RAP around the world!

The RAP-road project will take this initiative and bring it to countries where YI is not active. We will actively search for young people, introduce them to the RAP ideas and give them the opportunity to create their own RAP song (if they show any talent at all ;-)). Next to the joy of making music with young people the RAP education is central to this project.

This Youth Incentives newsletter of March 2007 introduces the RAP-road project.

Other Youth Incentives projects

We will visit the following YI projects which are described below. These are the projects located in East Africa and where possible and needed we will distribute materials supporting the work of the local partners of YI.

Rwanda project

In Rwanda YI started in January 2006 with the implementation of the so called SBY Project: sexual and reproductive health and rights for the youth of Butare:

1. Promote the Sexual and Reproductive rights of 6000 child headed households with special emphasis on their empowerment and gender related issues.
2. Increase the acceptance of HIV/AIDS among young people, especially for those living with HIV/AIDS, and promote their sexuality rights.
3. Increase the institutional capacity of ARBEF's regional branch and YAM: Youth Action Movement.

Tanzania Project

Youth Incentives assisted in revising the project proposal of UMATI (Uzazi na Malezi Bora Tanzania). Chama Cha Uzazi na Malezi Bora Tanzania (UMATI) is an autonomous, not for profit, non-political voluntary national NGO providing Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) education, information and services in Tanzania. It is a member of IPPF.

Malawi Project

A research team consisting of students from the Kamuzu College of Nursing and representatives from various Malawian youth organizations, such as the Youth Action Movement, was assembled and trained on how to work with the RAP-tool. The team travelled to villages throughout Dedza District of Malawi gathering data from young people, parents, and experts. The team collected nearly 300 youth surveys, interviewed over 30 parents, and spoke with numerous experts working in the field of SRH.

Several key issues were identified from the needs assessment, including ineffective communication between parents and/or guardians and young people and between young people and their partners. A project proposal, informed by the needs assessment, is being developed by FPAM and will be funded under the Youth Incentives Trust Fund.
